Actually, the real difference is that it is a scandal that gets your career into serious trouble when you tell a high profile lie and you are a legitimate climate scientist.
The industry lobbying group is in the business to telling lies, so it advances your career to lie if you work for such a lobbying group especially if that group is masquerading as a think tank.
It will be up to the public to decide which group has better credibility, the one that gets in trouble for lying or the one that lies for a living.

I don't know why people argue with me when I say is is OK to lie to defeat any enemy in the political war against progressives. Nixon had to lie to conceal the Watergate episode, Rupert Murdoch's people had to lie to protect their sources - but they were rightly crucified as they are out of touch neocons. Progressive fibs to attack the neocon camp are fully acceptable and necessary in order to continue to encourage those paying taxes to support the progressive professionally unemployed non-federal tax payer.
